Your website might look fine in a browser and still be invisible to Google. Technical SEO problems don't show up on the front end they live in your server settings, your code, and your crawl configuration.

This checklist walks through every major technical SEO check for a Kenyan website in 2026. Work through each section in order. Fix critical issues before moving to lower-priority items. If you'd rather hand this off, start with a free website audit and we'll run the checks for you.

What You Need Before You Start

Before opening any tools, get access to these:

  • Google Search Console (GSC) free, connected to your domain
  • Google PageSpeed Insights free, no login required
  • Screaming Frog SEO Spider free up to 500 URLs
  • Your hosting control panel login
  • A spreadsheet log each issue with status: Critical / Important / Monitor

Plan 36 hours for a small site. For ongoing monitoring, see SEO services Kenya.

Step 1: Crawlability and Indexation

Google has to find and read your pages before anything else matters.

  • Check yourdomain.co.ke/robots.txt for accidental blocks (Disallow: / is critical)
  • Check yourdomain.co.ke/sitemap.xml exists and is submitted in GSC
  • In GSC (Indexing > Pages), review Crawled - currently not indexed, Discovered - currently not indexed, and 404s
  • Verify only one canonical site version is accessible (https + preferred host), and all variants 301 redirect

Step 2: HTTPS and Security

  • Confirm SSL is active and valid
  • Check mixed content warnings in browser console
  • Confirm certificate expiry to avoid surprise outages

Step 3: Site Speed and Core Web Vitals

Run PageSpeed Insights on homepage + one key page (mobile first).

Targets:

  • LCP < 2.5s
  • INP < 200ms
  • CLS < 0.1

Common Kenyan issues:

  • Uncompressed hero images
  • Slow shared hosting (high TTFB)
  • No caching/CDN
  • Too many third-party scripts

Useful companion: website speed Kenya guide.

Step 4: Mobile Usability

  • Review GSC mobile usability issues
  • Validate readable font sizes and tap targets
  • Check no horizontal scroll or broken layouts
  • Test on a real Safaricom/Airtel data connection, not only office WiFi

Step 5: On-Page Technical Signals

  • Unique title tags and meta descriptions
  • One H1 per page, logical heading hierarchy
  • Descriptive image alt text + filenames
  • Self-referencing canonical tags on key pages

Step 6: Structured Data and Schema

Use Google Rich Results Test.

Common schema types:

  • LocalBusiness
  • FAQPage
  • Service
  • BreadcrumbList
  • Organization

Common errors:

  • Missing required fields
  • Invalid JSON-LD
  • Schema data mismatching visible page data

Step 7: Internal Linking and Architecture

Crawl with Screaming Frog and check:

  • Orphan pages
  • Broken internal links
  • Deep pages (>3 clicks from homepage)
  • Redirect chains

Kenya-Specific Technical Checks

  • Hosting latency and TTFB for Kenyan users
  • WhatsApp and M-Pesa widget performance impact
  • GBP NAP consistency with website details
